Wizz Air has officially launched a new direct connection between Varna and Rome, expanding its network from Bulgaria with year-round flights to one of Europe's most visited capitals. The first flight on the new route took off on April 28, with service to Rome's Fiumicino Airport scheduled three times weekly - every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday.

The airline, which remains the largest carrier by market share in Bulgaria, said ticket prices for the new route start from 14.99 euros and are already available through its official website and mobile application.

Rome, often called the Eternal City, remains one of the continent's most recognizable tourist destinations, attracting visitors with its combination of ancient history and modern urban life. Among its best-known landmarks are the Colosseum, Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon, and St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican, widely recognized as the largest Christian church in the world.

The Italian capital is also known for its architectural beauty beyond its monuments, with more than 280 fountains, major public spaces such as Piazza Navona, the Spanish Steps, and extensive parks and green areas that distinguish it from many other European capitals.

Wizz Air says the new route is intended to strengthen both tourism and regional connectivity between Bulgaria and Italy, while also improving travel opportunities for passengers from the Black Sea region.

According to Imperiale, the new destination reflects the airline's broader goal of offering affordable and reliable transport links while supporting tourism, regional mobility, and economic exchange across Central and Eastern Europe. ?The new route reflects our focus on providing affordable and reliable connections... The Rome connection comes shortly after Wizz Air announced a major expansion of its Varna base. Starting from the summer of 2026, the airline will add a third Airbus A321neo aircraft to its operations at Varna Airport, significantly increasing its capacity for the summer season.

The company estimates this expansion will create 500,000 additional seats for summer 2026 and support around 40 direct and 350 indirect jobs in aviation and tourism.

Wizz Air has operated in Bulgaria since 2005 and has steadily expanded its presence in the country. From Varna alone, the airline now serves 23 direct routes across 13 countries, contributing to both inbound and outbound tourism, as well as stronger business links with key European destinations.

Since launching operations in Varna in 2007, Wizz Air has transported more than 5.4 million passengers through the coastal city. In 2026 alone, the airline is offering more than 1.2 million seats from Varna.

The new Rome route is part of Wizz Air's wider long-term strategy for Bulgaria, which includes network growth, investments in operational stability, and improvements in passenger experience under its Customer First Compass transformation plan. The carrier says the goal remains the same: more accessible travel options across Europe and beyond, supported by sustainable development and stronger regional air connectivity.
